TASTING NOTES

This exclusive first vintage for new and upcoming winemaker Cary Quintana, is the wine that started it all. It is rustic yet elegant and refined. It’s layers of black fruits from the Mourvèdre compliment the bright and fresh tones of the Grenache. This style is one of her favorite blends and it is an homage reminiscent of her favorite Garnacha from Spain. Not your typical California fruit bomb of a wine, but a wine that has been hand crafted from a select vineyard and with flavors and qualities of an old world wine. This wine will reward you with time, so decant, sip and enjoy!

Total production 33 cases.

The Steel Plow Vineyard is located at the narrow northern end of Sonoma Valley, this certified organic vineyard lies in the Moon Mountain District. This beautiful vineyard is made up of alluvial soil, igneous volcanic rock and clay.

The grapes were harvested on September 28th, 2014. Co-fermented with 10% whole cluster of Mourvèdre. This wine spent 18 days on skins, then aged for 16 months in a neutral French puncheon before being bottled without fining of filtration.

MEET THE WINEMAKER

Every door we step through, every decision we make puts us exactly where we are meant to be. This is Cary Quintana’s story.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, or Cuban descent, her roots and culture shaped and influenced mer appreciation for wine.

In 2005, she founded Vine Wine Shop & Tasting Loft. This neighborhood wine shop was a place that brought together those looking to discover fantastic, unrepresented and esoteric wines from around the world. She fell in love.

Soils, farming practices, winemaking philosophies, and patience would become her center. In 2013, West Coast bound and unsure of how her journey would unfold, the beauty of Northern California fueled her next chapter. Self taught, self motivated with focused intention, she jumped all in and found her rhythm. Her first wine would be born in 2014, from organically sourced Sonoma Valley fruit, full of wide-eyed expression and hopeful of the many more vintages that would follow.

A minimalist at heart, she believes in keeping it simple, with a focus on the fruit source, intentionally sticking to small lots and getting out of the wine’s way. This marks a distinction of place, climate and varietal. She likes the idea and philosophy of working with unique vineyards that are conscientious and practice meticulous and organic farming. The soils are what she believes to be the start of the real story to a varietally expressive wine. Cary believes in being fully hands-on by hand harvesting and hand sorting her fruit, being fully transparent throughout her winemaking process.

Throughout the year, her time is spent patiently watching, being sensorially vigilant, and witnessing the beautiful development of must to wine, and vineyard to bottle without intervening or adjusting its natural evolvement. For Cary, the most important part of this journey is finding that balance and always remembering the land and vines that brought forth her wines.

Each harvest brings a new adventure with a glimpse of all that happened that year, and no one year is ever the same. She loves its history, how sensorial wine can be, how it evokes memories and a sense of place.  She also loves the Grenache varietal for its beautiful ability to express both its feminine and masculine sides with such vibrancy.

Cary hopes you come to find like she did – that one sip, one moment, one leap can change everything. She also hopes you enjoy these wines as much as she enjoys making them.
